Three gardening experts share tips on planting daffodil bulb bulbs for maximum success in spring

Fall is the best season to grow flower bulbs like daffodils. They take a while to bloom, so they need to be in the ground from September/October to November.

It is straightforward to learn how to plant daffodil bulb bulbs. There are wide varieties available. However, it is essential to determine the proper spacing and soil conditions to ensure you get yellow blooms next spring.

WHEN SHOULD DAFFODIL BULBS BE PLANTED?

To enjoy the flowers in February/March next season, daffodil bulbs can be planted from September to October. Although tulips can be planted until November, daffodils should be produced before the hard frosts arrive.

WHERE TO PLANT DAFFODILS in THE GARDEN

“Narcissi” or daffodils, commonly called, are highly tolerant bulbs that grow well in light soils and happily in clay. Sarah Raven, horticulturalists and author of Sarahraven.com (opens in new tab).

What’s more, they’ll grow equally well in either garden borders(opens in new tab) or pots, adds gardening expert Sam Marlow from GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk(opens in new tab). He says that daffodils can thrive in both sun and shade, so they are an excellent choice for any size garden. Although daffodils can grow anywhere that receives at least some sun, they should not be planted near south-facing walls as they could heat up in spring. Avoid full shade as they are less likely to flower.

ALAN TITCHMARSH – HOW TO PLANT DAFFODIL BULBS TO ACHIEVE THE BEST SUCCESS

As shown in the video above, Titchmarsh recommends that you inspect the daffodil bulb first. You want them to be plump. This will help you determine if they are reliable.

It’s not all about size: small bulbs can also produce beautiful flowers. These are his top three tips.

You should dig three times the size of the bulb. They will only bloom if they are planted enough.

Place them with the tip up in well-draining soil. If the soil is compacted, you can aerate it first.

For a beautiful display, plant the bulbs in groups. However, it is best to keep them at least 10 cm apart.

HOW MANY DAFFODIL BULBS SHOULD You PLANT TOGETHER

People with extensive gardens can think big. Raven explains that sixty bulbs per square meter will produce a stunning display of spring flowers. Raven explains that daffodils can be grown in containers and pots if there is limited space. For a spectacular show, fill your containers with peatless compost (opens in new tab). Plant bulbs at 4-6in (10-15cm deep) with 2in (5cm between bulbs) for a beautiful display. You can plant narcissus and dahlias together for a stunning display in the same bed.

Your daffodil bulbs should be planted in circular shapes in your garden in groups of six to ten bulbs. Marlow explains that daffodils are excellent for gardening with ‘less effort and big results.’ To do this, dig a hole about six inches deep in the soil. Then plant three to ten bulbs together, depending on the hole size.
