Garden Terms:

Acidic Soil:

On a pH scale of 1 to 14, soil with a rating below 7; and soil with a value of 7 is neutral. The lime content of soil determines its pH.

Alkaline Soil:

See acidic soil.

Annual:

Plant that completes its cycle of germination from setting seed through dying in a single growing season.

Aquatic Plant:

Plant that can live in water, either floating or completely submerged.

Biennial:

Plant requiring two growing seasons to flower and seed.

Blanch:

Method of cultivating that protects all or part of plant from light, to promote succulent, white foliage or bulb.

Bolt:

Result of plant producing flowers rather than a good heart; common of lettuces in dry, hot spells

Bulb:

Plant storage organ, usuallu formed underground, containing the following year's growth buds.

Bulb Planter:

Trowel-sized, cylindrical device for removing a plug of soil and enabling bulbs to be planted easily in grass, etc.

Calyx:

Usually green, outer part of a flower, formed from the sepals, that encases the petals in bud.

Crown:

The part of a herbaceous plant from where new stems are produced and to where they die back in autumn.

Cultivar:

A man-made or cultivated variety, produced by hydridization.
